This one's for you, Tammy!

While visiting one of the pools at Corolla Light last weekend, I discovered that my dear friend Tammy is un-enlightened when it comes to cocktailing... During lunch, I gave her a sip of my margarita on the rocks (she's only had frozen), and then found out she's never tasted a mojito...

Soooo, when we take our next trip south, I'm makin' a new drink each night... Friday - margaritas on the rocks; Saturday - mojitos; and Sunday - Caipirinhas. Here are some recipes I found... Thanks to Food & Wine and The Blue Talon!

Juicy Margaritas

Ingredients
1 cup tequila (preferably 100% blue agave)
1/2 cup Cointreau
1 1/4 cups fresh lime juice
1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup fresh orange juice
1/4 cup superfine sugar
4 teaspoons honey, warmed
Directions
1.Combine all of the ingredients in a large pitcher and stir to dissolve the sugar. Refrigerate until chilled or serve immediately over cracked ice.

Notes
To be called tequila, the liquor must be made from at least 51% blue agave, a Mexican succulent plant. It can then be combined with liquor distilled from sugar cane or other raw materials. The finest tequila is distilled from 100 percent blue agave and categorized by how long it's aged. Plata tequila, also known as white or silver, isn't aged at all, and its clean, peppery flavor is ideal in margaritas. Reposado tequila is aged in oak for between 2 and 11 months, so it's mellower and sweeter. Añejo tequila, the most refined, is aged for at least 1 year in oak, making for a smooth, aromatic tequila that's best served neat, like good whisky or brandy.

Telluride Mojitos

Ingredients
16 small fresh mint sprigs, plus 4 more for garnish
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons superfine sugar
1/2 cup fresh lime juice
3/4 cup white or gold rum
8 dashes bitters
2 cups club soda
Directions
1.In a bowl, using a wooden spoon, crush the mint with the sugar until the mint is coarsely chopped and the sugar is pale green. Add the lime juice, rum and bitters and stir to dissolve the sugar.
2.Strain the mixture through a coarse strainer into a small pitcher. Pour into tall glasses over ice and top each drink with 1/2 cup of the club soda. Garnish with mint sprigs and serve.

Traditional Brazilian Caipirinha

Ingredients
2 ea Ripe Limes (or 4 Key Limes)
4 tsp Granulated Sugar
5 oz. Cachaça
Ice - Cracked or Small Cubes
Directions
This recipe makes two cocktails, as it would be a shame to drink Caipirinhas alone! This drink also requires one slightly esoteric piece of bar equipment, a muddler, which can be found at most kitchen or gourmet stores.
Begin by slicing the limes in half from top to bottom. Remove the pithy white part in the center. Lay each half lime flat on the cutting board and cut into 4 - 6 pieces, depending on size. Drop one entire cut up lime into each of two “old fashioned”, or highball, glasses. Add 2 tsp of sugar to each glass. Using the muddler, mash the limes and sugar together until well mixed. Add ice. Add 2 1/2 oz. of Cachaça to each glass. Stir or shake until all sugar is dissolved.
NOTE: Many Brazilians prefer the drink sweeter, so feel free to experiment with extra sugar if that is your style.

So, Tam - be prepared to get your drink on, sista! And all of the ingredients are NATURAL, so there's no reason to say "no"!

Horses, Peonies and Peach Blossoms - Oh My!

And now from Paper Fresh... The future of beauty...
"Inspired by the art of Chinese paper-cutting, Eyelashes blend an element of traditional culture with contemporary design.
Intricately cut and delicately pretty, Eyelashes are available in three styles, each infused with symbolic meaning rooted in Chinese culture:
Horses: symbolic of success
Peony: for happiness and good fortune
Peach blossom: a symbol of love and romance
Unique and expressive, Eyelashes come in two sizes: accentuate the corners of your eyes with the smaller lashes for a subtle daytime look, or make a statement with the full lashes for a special occasion."

Who needs Latisse when your lashes can look like this??!!

I love overachievers (and I'm not being a smart aleck!)

So I put an email out to my homegirls about which apps I should add to the Droid. Kel sent a few suggestions and Dal sent a couple, but Mi went the extra mile! She asked her pal Olivia (a Droid junkie) for a list, and these are her suggestions (with commentary):

- The Weather Channel (multi-location monitoring, hour by hour, 10-day forecasts.)
- AK notepad (Just let's you record notes)
- RedBoxer (not free, but if you use the red box, a must have. Let's you reserve movies from your phone.)
- Pandora (lets you stream new music to your phone. Great for car trips.)
- Twidroid (If you're on twitter, this is a must-have)
- Backgrounds (Let's you choose pretty graphics and photos for the background.)
- HelixLauncher (A home page replacement app that lets you have up to 7 home screens. Also has slightly more modern look.)
- TouchDown (It's a $20 app, but she has to use it to get her work e-mail.)
- E! Online (Great for when you need to fill 10 minutes.)
- Color Flashlight (tuns your phone into a flash light, also has neat options like making it a strobe light or a candle)
- Digital Clock Widget (a nicer looking clock than what comes standard on the phone.)
- Abduction
- Blow Up Lite
- Dots n Boxes
- Labyrinth Lite
- Paper Toss

Mi, who is an iPhone gal, "loves":
Hipstamatic, Lo-Mob, Pandora, Slacker, Bing Music, Flixster, Blockbuster, IMDB, Wikipedia, Dragon Dictation, Bump, NPR News, Convert Units, Flashlight, Shop Lucky, QVC, USPS Mobile, TripCase, Southwest, pic2shop, ShopSavvy, TagReader, Epicurious, Food Network, AllRecipes, Starbucks, Whole Foods, Mixology, RunKeeper, Virtual Trainer, Crossfit Daily, Off leash (a cool dog park app)

She's not sure which ones "crossover" to the Droid (we'll save that for another day), but her final e-mail comment made me feel all warm inside:

"My friends who have Droids love them about as much as everyone I know that have iPhones."

It's official: Mi is a rock star, and my confidence in the technology-selection arena is sky high!

My first time

It is official: The world MUST be coming to an end.

Today is the first day of the rest of my blogging life AND I bought a Droid this afternoon - my first fancy phone.

I am not sure what to do with either, but I'm certain I can figure both out. I have already e-mailed three of my much-cooler friends (what up Kelly, Dal and Mi?!) to e-mail me lists of apps to add to my Droid, and I plan to read other folks' blogs to get some ideas on what to write on mine.

Like I told my friend Anna (my blogging inspiration), some of the best stuff out there in the world is the result of someone copying someone else and sometimes, "one-upping" that person... I don't know if I'll be able to one-up anyone on mastering the friggin' Droid (I barely know how to use my IPod), but I'm going to give this blog thang a try...

Now, if I could just figure out how bloggers get other people to read their stuff... But maybe I should first figure out why I would want anyone to read my stuff... Dilemmas, indeed...
